Cannes winner ‘Border’ by Iranian-Swedish director Ali Abbasi is set to represent Sweden at 2019 Oscar race.
Abbasi’s ‘Border’ was selected to rep Sweden as Foreign Language entry for Oscars 2019.
The director was quoted by media as saying that he was “overwhelmed” this film had been selected, adding, “I thought it was impossible to even get to Cannes, but as the film has grown and now is being screened at festivals all over the world, the Oscars [don’t] seem so far away all of a sudden.”
Abbasi, who was born in Iran, made the impressive title ‘Border’ which premiered in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes 2018 and tapped with top prize.
“‘Border’ follows a customs officer with an extraordinary sense of smell, who develops a strange attraction to a suspect she’s investigating, leading to revelations that call into question her entire existence,” a plot summary for the flick reads.
Nominated titles for 91st Academy Awards are set to be revealed in January 2019.
